Bridges youth program

Originally appeared in the September 8, 2005 edition of the Commercial Appeal

Starting Monday, the Bridges Future Builders program will become a year-round initiative, providing after-school activities ranging from forensic science and gardening to tutoring and TCAP preparation. The program will be offered to students in grades 6 through 11.

Participants will be able to choose an area of interest and given the opportunity to learn from experienced instructors. Skill areas, called Guilds, include: Arts, forensic science, spoken word/creative writing, PeaceJam, dance, adventure, gardening, culinary arts, filmmaking and theater. Each session will build up to a year-end production/project that will allow participants to showcase what they've learned. The program will take place Monday through Saturday at the BRIDGES Center (477 N. Fifth.).

Students can participate from one to six days per week giving parents flexibility in setting their child's schedule. The program fee is $400 per semester regardless of the level of participation. Scholarships are also available for qualified applicants. Contact Jicara Boone at 260-3794 for information or to request an application. Applications are also available on the Web site, bridgesusa.org.
