Youths of PeaceJam Conference hear address by Nobel laureate

Originally appeared in the May 19, 2005 edition of the Commercial Appeal

By Antoinette B. Cheney, Special to Whitehaven Appeal

BRIDGES, in partnership with Rhodes College, recently welcomed 260 high school youths from the Mid-South for the fourth annual BRIDGES-PeaceJam Conference. This year's visiting Nobel laureate was Mairead Corrigan Maguire.

BRIDGES-PeaceJam is a yearlong international education program built around 12 leading Nobel laureates who work personally with youths to pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody. Along with studying the PeaceJam curriculum, the participants develop and implement a service-action project in their school or community.

During the PeaceJam Conference, the participants had an opportunity to spend the entire weekend with Maguire sharing workshops, lectures and service projects with this peacemaker.
