BRIDGES In the News

Bridges gets into Uptown spirit with housewarming
By Rebecca Wilson
Originally appeared in the October 14, 2004 edition of the Commercial Appeal

Bridges, a training organization for youths, officially moved into the Uptown Redevelopment Neighborhood.

Located on Auction at 477 N. Fifth, Bridges invited neighbors who have been observing construction over the past year to tour the facility and eat dinner with staff and supporters in the Wilson Family High Adventure Hall.

The hall is one of the finest indoor challenge courses in the country, with its 35- foot climbing wall donated by the Grizzlies and The Zone, and the high ropes course given by AutoZone.

Following supper and the welcome by Bridges president James R. Boyd, Robert Lipscomb, executive director of Memphis Housing Authority and director of Housing and Community Development, expressed his congratulations.

Ten representatives of religious communities led the guests in a candlelit procession into the grassy amphitheater where the Stax Academy Choir and Mt. Vernon Baptist Church adult and youth choir performed.

Closing the evening was a litany of dedication led by Rev. C. B. Baker of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, followed by a solo "We Are Family" sung by Bridges staff member Renee McCreight. During the solo, every guest held a candle that was lighted and Rabbi Micah Greenstein of Temple Israel prayed that the light be taken out into the community.
